Nathaniel Metcalf was born on April 15, 1862, in Charleston, Mississippi

In 1870, 5 years after slavery ended Nate was 8 yrs old living with his parents and siblings.


by 1880, he was still in the household with his parents working on the farm. According to the census he was not working for 11 of the months and 3 more sisters were born.
by 1900 he was married to Mary Hill Wright for 4 years with his own children. Living 3 doors down from his parents still working on the farm.

Charleston, Mississippi, in 1862 was a small town influenced by the American Civil War. Activity in the area was shaped by economic, social, and military factors during this tumultuous period.
Located in Tallahatchie County, Charleston was an agricultural community reliant on cotton farming. Slave labor was dominant, driving the economy. It was surrounded by fertile lands suited for plantation agriculture.
Nathaniel Metcalf married Mary Hill in 1886 when he was 24 years old.
