The Legacy of the Metcalf/Collins/Johnson Families of the Mississippi Delta

In addition to the new look of the Metcalf/Collins/Johnson Family Reunion website, we are excited to introduce “The MCJ Cornerstone” a monthly column dedicated to the historical and genealogical background of the three families. Genealogy is derived from two Greek words, genea meaning generation and logos meaning knowledge; therefore genealogy means the generation, (or family) of knowledge.

Our families are rich in tradition and culture and that richness is reflected in both the strength and endurance of our roots in the sweetness and harshness of the Mississippi Delta, specifically Tallahatchie and Yalubusha counties.

The goal of the column is to continue in the footsteps of our ancestors. Acknowledging the legacy of those family members that came before us. Keeping in mind the present day digital display sprung out of honoring the birthdays of Mary Hill and then her daughter Ida Bell Metcalf Collins so many years ago.

Our goal is to capture the spirit and essence of our ancestors by preserving their memories by way of historical records, research, charts, oral histories, and other means to continue to unravel the genealogical mysteries of our family’s past, while cementing the kinship and familial connections of the present and future.

To make this goal a success we are asking the Metcalf, Collins and Johnson families to combine their forces to help make this a reality in the 21st. century. If anyone is interested in participating in this genealogical effort, please contact Ernest Collins at ecollinsemg@gmail.com. Additional information and next steps will appear in next month’s column.
